The fast pace of our lives, overwhelming information, and our brain\u2019s tendency to favor the familiar make critical thinking particularly challenging. This essential skill, like a muscle needing constant exercise, helps us understand the real issues and find effective solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Critical Thinking?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Critical thinking involves systematically analyzing and evaluating information and arguments to make reasoned judgments and decisions. It requires questioning assumptions, identifying biases, and considering various perspectives to solve problems effectively. It is both a mind-set and a collaborative approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Critical Thinking vs. Other Approaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Critical thinking focuses on evaluating and reasoning through information, while lateral thinking uses unconventional methods for creative problem-solving, and design thinking emphasizes user understanding and iterative solution development. Through interconnected disciplines, critical thinking aims to understand problems from multiple perspectives and evaluate various facts to identify the root cause. It is all about solving the right problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Think Slow Before Thinking Fast<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Albert Einstein said, \u201cIf I had 60 minutes to solve a problem, I would spend 55 minutes understanding the problem and 5 minutes finding a solution.\u201d Often, we rush to solutions without fully understanding the problem, wasting valuable time. Investing time in critical thinking enhances problem-solving efficiency and helps us avoid solving for the wrong problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Truly listening, a key critical thinking skill<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilitators, including myself, may sometimes fall into the method\/agenda trap, focusing on what\u2019s next rather than truly listening. This can lead to missed co-creation opportunities. Improving listening skills can enrich your abilities and presence as a facilitator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Start with a curious, child-like \u201cwhy\u201d approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand a problem deeply, start by asking exploratory questions. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Five_whys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">5 Why Technique<\/a>&nbsp;promotes curiosity to uncover deeper causes, as shown in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BEQvq99PZwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jefferson Memorial video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tools like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ishikawa_diagram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Fishbone diagram<\/a>&nbsp;break problems into smaller components. Both help us to uncover aspects that we have not thought about yet. Once you have focused on the rout cause you can use the \u201cHow Might We&#8230;\u201d statement to help communicate the issue with clarity to stakeholders and customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<strong>The Double Diamond Method<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The next phase is then exploring creatively possible solutions. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Double_Diamond_(design_process_model)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">double diamond model,<\/a>&nbsp;known from design thinking, is also valuable for critical thinking. Its iterative and explorative nature helps validate problem statements and test solutions early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5190f9e-037e-4933-9942-f620507ea609_680x374.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff5190f9e-037e-4933-9942-f620507ea609_680x374.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Techniques like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/a32qxsh\/reverse-brainstorming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reverse brainstorming<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.debonogroup.com\/services\/core-programs\/six-thinking-hats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">six thinking hats<\/a>&nbsp;can spark new perspectives and challenge conventional thinking patterns which help us step out of our regular thinking patterns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prioritize with the How Now Wow Matrix<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To prioritize impactful solutions, I often use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/toolbox.hyperisland.com\/how-now-wow-matrix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">How Now Wow matrix<\/a>.
